How to Become a CEO in 3-5 Years

Becoming the CEO of a company at an early age might be easier now but that doesn’t mean that the work you have to put in is any less. There’s no one path for those who are interested in how to become a CEO. For that matter, if you aspire to be a CEO by a certain age or in the next few years, the climb up the ladder will be far more steep. Then there’s the issue of being a successful CEO but that is a discussion for another day.

Having said that, here are a few tips that serves as a list of broad guidelines on how to become a CEOin 3-5 years:

1: Get an MBA from an accredited business school

Not unless you’re the founder of your own company, the chances of your becoming a CEO without accredited education is little to none. Getting an MBA from a top business school or a moderately respected one should do. Of course, this is only the first stage that will serve as a foundation as you begin to understand how to become a CEO.

2: Build years of work experience

For this, find an environment and colleagues that support your work goals. While you don’t have to work in one firm all your life to make it to the top, it has been found that internal hires are usually the case when it comes to picking a CEO. Not unless the company cannot find an employee with the necessary vision and business knowledge to lead the company. That said, even if leadership comes naturally to some people, it most certainly can be learnt through emulating your superiors at the workplace.

3: Personal Drive and Ambition

Personal drive and ambition is vital. Most successful entrepreneurs list these two personal traits as vital to the overarching goal of how to become a CEO. If you’re the type who is persistent despite years of failure and setbacks, then you can overcome this challenge of how to become a CEOwith hard work, a clear vision of where you want to be and a plan on how to get there.

4: Build a strong team

No matter whether you are in the lower rungs of management or close to the top of the corporate ladder, building a strong team around you is another strategy on how to become a CEO. In other words, find people who support you and help you grow with their expertise. Getting experience with team building is vital to how to become a CEO. In fact, it plays a greater role in being successful as a CEO in the years ahead too.

5: Prepare to work hard

No matter what you think, it is vital to understand that the foundation of how to become a CEOinvolves putting in many years of hard work. Sometimes, you might feel as if you’re not getting any closer to your overall goal. It’s in these moments that you should decide to work harder. This should come naturally to you as long you enjoy what you do. The results will definitely follow. Even if there’s no prescribed formula on how to become a CEO, it all boils to excelling in your field. That only comes from years of hard work and perseverance apart from being able to manage and understand people well. That, as you all know, rarely comes easy.
